The Land and People of Maharees & Castlegregory
– A History 1560-1960

Maherees and Castlegregory

Rich in detail, The Land and People of Maharees and Castlegregory is the most complete account to date of rural life in the half barony of Leitriúch and provides an excellent source for family historians. Drawing overwhelmingly on primary sources, Martin Lynch chronicles a four hundred year period from the Desmond raid of 1583, through the famine years of the 1840’s to the Land War and on through the first half of the twentieth century. Amidst much upheaval, people continued their everyday work on the land or at sea. Neither location was guaranteed to provide a reliable income.

‘An extraordinary research achievement’
